Federal Chancellor of Austria
Christian Kern was appointed as Federal Chancellor on May 17th 2016.
Following positions in journalism and as a staff member in the Austrian Parliament and at the Federal Chancellery, Kern started a career in the energy sector in 1997. At Verbund, the largest Austrian energy provider, he became a member of the Managing Board in 2007. In 2010, he was appointed CEO of Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB. In this capacity, from 2014 onwards he also was the Chairman of the Brussels-based Community of European Railways CER. From 2011 onwards, ÖBB examined the railways’ role during the NS regime in the “Verdrängte Jahre” (“Repressed Years”) project.
Kern was born in Vienna on January 17th 1966.
He attended high school at Gottschalkgasse in the Vienna district of Simmering and holds a degree in sociology, political science and media and communication sciences from the University of Vienna.
Christian Kern is married and has four children.
